In a perfect world, every home would come with a luxury, extra-large walk-in closet. It would surely come equip with ample shelfing for shoes, more drawers than you would ever care to count, and a plush loveseat so that you can sit back and marvel at the beauty that is your closet. But this, sad to say, is not reality – at least it is not mine! One of the most common issues when buying a new home, one that I have run into with practically every move, is there just not being enough closet space. A small closet can make your dream home feel like another dud… but have no fear because this problem IS fixable! Here are some tips and tricks on how to make a small closet space work for you.
Bins and Baskets
When we went to move my daughter into her first college dorm, I was shocked by how little the closets were. The girl might be the opposite of a minimalist and I did not know how she was going to manage it; however, we were able to make it work by buying her a cube organizer with spaces to fit four fabric cube storage bins. We placed it on the floor of her closet, and she used the top as a shelf for some of her shoes. This affordable, simple, and chic style of organizing allows for easy categorization of your belongings as well as
Garment Racks
A recent fad that we have incorporated into my youngest daughter’s bedroom is the use of a garment rack. Some of these even come with shelving on one side, so you can not only display your trendiest outfits here, but also purses, shoes, etc. It’s functional and can quite literally double your closet space.
The Rule of 2
I want to start off by saying that this one is a tough pill to swallow. The Rule of 2 is quite simple, if you have not used or worn it in 2 months, get rid of it. Obviously, there are some exceptions, as your sweaters in the heat of summer, but as we live in Florida this rule is pretty handy. If you don’t want to actually get rid of your beloved belongings, start by boxing them up and putting them in the garage or attic. Chances are you will forget that they exist and eventually come to terms with letting them go.
I hope you enjoyed these tips and tricks on how to make a small closet work in your home. Have a wonderful rest of February and enjoy this beautiful weather we are blessed to be having here in sunny Sarasota.
