We all know that moving is expensive. Like – really, REALLY expensive. You are not just paying for a new home. There is the cost of packing, physically moving all your stuff, an interim storage unit, probably some new furniture, etc. Frankly, there are so many additional costs, it could make your head hurt.
All this being said, it is not surprising that many find themselves tight on cash after a move. Furthermore, while it is always important to be saving money, it is especially so after a move. Here are three simple tips on how to cut down expenses after a move.
Prioritize Your Improvements
It is so easy to get caught up in making your new home perfect right after move in. The excitement is tangible, and unfortunately with this, price tags can seem to fade away. Prioritize what upgrades you simply cannot live without, and their estimated costs. Fr example, it is more doable to repaint your walls than to redo your kitchen. Your house does not have to be perfect right away – it will get there eventually.
Conserve Energy
My daughter actually suggested this one for the list, as she had no clue how much utilities really costs until she moved into her first apartment. Needless to say, she was shocked that leaving the lights on, keeping the AC turned down low, and long showers really do add up. Of course, the larger the home, the more substantial the cost can be. So, conserve energy where you can – it will make a difference.
Cut Back on Entertainment
This is probably the easiest way to save money, and it makes a HUGE difference. Cook dinner at home, have family movie night in, play a board game, or do whatever else you want that is free or cheaply done at home. Think about it, you can eat a steak for $25 at a restaurant or make the same thing for about $6 at home. So cut back on entertainment, at least for a little while after your move.
